Seafarer’s Monument Sails Forth

Dec 2020

Thanks to a generous grant from the CS Bird Foundation, to the Del Deo Foundation, the Seafarer’s Monument has entered the enlargement phase, as production of the life-size bronze monument begins. When completed the monument will be sited on the waterfront of Provincetown to honor the seafaring legacy of the town.

The Seafarer's Monument was originally known as the Fishermen's Memorial, but the project, which has been an off-again /on-again story since 1978 seemed to run aground in 2016 when the committee entrusted with the project abandoned plans for a bronze monument to the fishermen and set their sites on other types of memorials. However, the project has long been dear to the hearts of many in the town, and a group formed, Friends of the Seafarer's Tribute, who kept the dream of a lasting monument alive.

In 2020, the Del Deo Foundation for the Arts has stepped in to manage the non-profit funding of the project, facilitating the CS Bird donation to get the full-scale work underway. Romolo Del Deo will be overseeing the transformation of the bronze scale model, he created for the town, into a monumental work at his studio in Pietrasanta, Italy. Pictured above is the scale model on exhibit at the Provincetown Monument for the "Creating a Difference" exhibit honoring the cultural and preservational contributions to the community by the Del Deo family.
